Senior Protein Scientist – Protein Biochemistry Lead

About the role

We are seeking a Senior Protein Scientist to join a multinational drug discovery organisation in Macclesfield. The role is permanent, full‑time and onsite, offering the chance to lead protein‑focused projects across biologics and antibody programmes.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and support client drug‑discovery projects involving biologics and antibody portfolios.
• Design and execute protein biochemistry experiments, including molecular cloning, CRISPR‑based design, and expression in mammalian and bacterial systems.
• Purify proteins using AKTA platforms (ion‑exchange, size‑exclusion, affinity) and characterise them with DLS, HPLC, capillary electrophoresis and plate‑based assays.
• Mentor junior scientists and technicians, creating development plans and overseeing their day‑to‑day work.
• Maintain regular communication with external partners and clients, providing data updates, presentations and scope of work.
• Manage multiple projects simultaneously while ensuring high scientific standards.

Required profile

• PhD in a biological or biochemical discipline with post‑doctoral experience (industry experience of 1+ year preferred) OR MSc/BSc with 5+ years industry experience.
• Proven experience supervising or managing scientists/technicians.
• Strong knowledge of protein biochemistry; structural biology or biophysical characterisation is a plus.
