Strategic Planning Lead

About the role

We are seeking a Strategic Planning Lead to drive the delivery of a new Local Plan for a public sector organisation in Dorset. This hybrid contract role (3‑4 days onsite) runs for an initial six months with the possibility of extension.

Key responsibilities

• Define and manage the critical path and project management framework for the Local Plan and accompanying Design Guide.
• Lead a spatial planning team of around 50 staff, ensuring resources are aligned to deliver the plan.
• Collaborate closely with senior directors, the Cabinet Member for Planning, councillors and executive directors, maintaining a strong stakeholder presence.
• Oversee diary management to maximise face‑to‑face interaction with senior decision‑makers.

Required profile

• Significant senior experience in strategic planning within the public sector.
• Proven track record of producing and adopting Local Plans under the NPPF.
• Ability to influence senior officials, elected members and external stakeholders.
• Strong understanding of regional and local political contexts.
