Legal Member – Tribunal Appointment

About the role

The Investigatory Powers Tribunal is seeking a distinguished lawyer to join its panel of legal members. The appointment will involve making judicial decisions on matters of national importance, often dealing with sensitive and classified material.

Key responsibilities

• Hear and decide cases concerning conduct of public bodies, intelligence agencies and law enforcement under the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000.
• Interpret and apply the Investigatory Powers Act 2016, the Human Rights Act 1998 and related legislation.
• Produce reasoned judgments and contribute to the development of case law in the field of investigatory powers.
• Attend tribunal sessions in London and collaborate with other judicial members.

Required profile

• Senior‑level lawyer with a proven track record of legal excellence.
• Extensive experience in administrative law and public law matters.
• Familiarity with the legislative framework governing investigatory powers and human rights.
• Judicial experience is advantageous but not mandatory.

Required skills

What we offer

• Approximately 15 days of work per year, paid at the rate of a deputy High Court judge.
