Medical Assessor – Specialist Registrar (Aviation Medicine)

About the role

The Civil Aviation Authority is seeking a Medical Assessor at Specialist Registrar level to certify the medical fitness of CAA‑licensed personnel, primarily pilots and air traffic controllers. You will work within a world‑leading aviation regulator, contributing to safety through medical assessment and policy development.

Key responsibilities

• Assess and certify the medical fitness of aviation personnel.
• Oversee and support Aeromedical Examiners (AMEs).
• Develop evidence‑based aeromedical policies and guidance for national and international use.
• Participate in a training programme, including a sponsored MSc in Aerospace Medicine and the Diploma in Aviation Medicine.
• Collaborate with other organisations involved in aviation and space medicine.

Required profile

• Registered with the GMC and hold a UK Licence to Practice.
• Completed core medical training (e.g., IMT, Anaesthetics, ACCS, or General Practice) with the relevant Royal College examination (MRCP, FRCA, MRCGP, or MRCEM).
• Demonstrated interest in aviation and space medicine.
• Ability to undergo BPSS security clearance and national security vetting.

Required skills

• Clinical assessment and analytical abilities.
• Knowledge of aeromedical standards and regulations.
