Multi-skilled Builder

About the role

Somerset Council is seeking a versatile builder to maintain and repair its extensive housing portfolio. You will work to council standards, ensuring over 5,600 communal areas, tenanted properties and empty homes are safe, functional and compliant.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out stonework, fencing, path and floor repairs.
• Patch and re‑plaster walls and rooms, including full‑wall rendering and skimming.
• Resolve damp and mould issues across properties.
• Perform tiling, painting and other trade repairs as required.
• Plan and manage work timelines to minimise repeat visits.
• Oversee contractor work, raise concerns about performance and ensure compliance with health and safety legislation.
• Liaise with repairs supervisors, trade teams and external contractors.
• Provide cost estimates and maintain commercial awareness for each job.

Required profile

• Minimum GCSE (or equivalent) in English and Mathematics (Grades C/4 or above).
• Relevant construction qualifications such as BTEC, HNC, HND or equivalent experience.
• Demonstrated ability to organise, prioritise and make decisions on site.
• Good written and verbal communication skills and a professional telephone manner.
• Understanding of Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, building regulations and housing compliance standards.
