Payroll Officer

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Payroll & Pensions Officer to join a busy local authority payroll team in London. The role is temporary for three months and will involve processing payroll for a large, complex workforce while ensuring compliance with HMRC, pension regulations and council policies.

Key responsibilities

• Process end‑to‑end payroll for council employees, meeting all deadlines.
• Maintain employee payroll records in Oracle Payroll, including starters, leavers, contract changes and statutory payments.
• Calculate overtime, allowances, deductions, salary‑sacrifice schemes and retro‑payments.
• Administer statutory payments such as SSP, SMP and SPP and submit required HMRC filings.
• Handle payroll queries from staff, managers and external stakeholders.
• Process LG Scheme pension contributions and deductions.
• Reconcile payroll reports, perform checks and support year‑end activities including P60 production.
• Assist with system testing, process improvements and Oracle upgrades.

Required profile

• Proven payroll experience in a local authority, public sector or large organisation.
• Strong knowledge of payroll legislation, taxation, National Insurance and statutory payments.
• Experience with LG Scheme pension processing.
• Excellent attention to detail and ability to work to strict deadlines.
• Strong communication and customer‑service skills.
• CIPP qualification or equivalent payroll training is desirable.
