Pre-Construction Design Manager – Electrical Substations

About the role

The Pre-Construction Design Manager – Electrical Substations leads the design development and coordination of high‑voltage substation projects (11kV–400kV) during the pre‑construction phase. The role ensures designs are safe, compliant, cost‑effective and ready for mobilisation, while supporting contractor onboarding and site readiness.

Key responsibilities

• Lead multidisciplinary design teams (civil, electrical, protection & control) to produce compliant substation designs.
• Review and programme deliverables such as single‑line diagrams, layout drawings, cable routing, earthing designs and equipment specifications.
• Interface with clients, consultants and stakeholders to resolve technical queries and obtain approvals.
• Manage pre‑qualification, onboarding and performance monitoring of subcontractors, ensuring SSSTS/SMSTS, CSCS and relevant electrical authorisations.
• Support site mobilisation by confirming constructability, conducting early site surveys and setting‑out.
• Prepare, review and authorise RAMS for pre‑construction activities in line with CDM Regulations.
• Promote a strong safety culture and embed “Safety by Design” and value‑engineering principles throughout the design process.

Required profile

• Proven experience leading design development for high‑voltage electrical substations in the UK.
• Strong knowledge of UK electrical standards, DNO/IDNO requirements and CDM Regulations.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multidisciplinary teams and coordinate with external stakeholders.
• Experience in contractor onboarding, performance monitoring and safety compliance.
